What Is Mass Loaded Vinyl?
Mass loaded vinyl (MLV) is a dense, flexible soundproofing membrane engineered to block airborne noise. It uses high-mass fillers — barium sulfate and calcium carbonate — pressed into a limp vinyl sheet that adds significant mass to walls, ceilings, and floors without adding much thickness. That added mass is what stops sound waves from passing through your assembly, raising its STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating.
Unlike acoustic foam, which only absorbs echo inside a room, mass loaded vinyl is a true sound barrier. A single 1 lb/sf layer of MLV sandwiched between two sheets of drywall can push a standard wall from STC 34 to STC 52+ — enough to silence loud TV, music, and conversations between rooms. That's why MLV is the go-to material for home theaters, recording studios, apartment walls, mechanical rooms, and commercial construction where building codes require soundproofing.
Our mass loaded vinyl is independently tested, ASTM-certified, 100% lead-free, and made in three weights — MLV Lite (0.6 lb/sf) for budget metal-stud walls, MLV Regular (1 lb/sf) for standard residential and commercial soundproofing, and MLV Pro (2 lb/sf) for maximum performance in studios, theaters, and industrial applications.
How Much Does Mass Loaded Vinyl Cost?
Mass loaded vinyl pricing is driven by weight (lb/sf) and roll size. We sell direct from the manufacturer, so our per-square-foot pricing is consistently 20–40% below big-box and reseller pricing. Here's the current price-per-square-foot for every weight we stock:
| Mass Loaded Vinyl Product | Weight | STC | Roll Size | Price / sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MLV Lite | 0.6 lb/sf | 21 | 100 sq ft | From $0.99 |
| MLV Regular | 1 lb/sf | 26 | 100 sq ft | From $1.99 |
| MLV Pro | 2 lb/sf | 29 | 100 sq ft | From $2.99 |
Pricing shown is starting per-sf for full-roll quantities. Use the coverage calculator on each product page to estimate exactly how many rolls your project needs.
Where to Buy Mass Loaded Vinyl — Why Buy Direct
Most contractors and DIY installers buy mass loaded vinyl from Amazon, Home Depot, Soundproof Cow, or Acoustical Solutions — all middlemen reselling the same MLV. We cut out the resellers and ship the same commercial-grade material directly from our Tampa, Florida warehouse. That means lower per-square-foot pricing, manufacturer-direct technical support, and no surprise restocking fees on full rolls.
- Manufacturer-direct pricing — no Amazon, no Home Depot markup
- Independently tested STC ratings — every roll ASTM-certified
- 100% lead-free — safe for bedrooms, nurseries, occupied spaces
- Ships in 2–3 business days from our US warehouse
